The athlete, who hailed from Portaferry in Northern Ireland, was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in May 2025.

She achieved the biggest triumph of her career in June 2024 when she won the women’s 1500m gold medal at the European Athletics Championships in Rome, clocking 4:04.66 to claim her first major senior championship title.

Although she qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics, an Achilles injury forced her to withdraw shortly before her scheduled heat.

Mageean also won 1500m silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and European Championship silver in the same year. She had earlier claimed 1500m bronze at the 2016 European Championships in Amsterdam and bronze at the 2019 European Indoor Championships.

In 2020, she set an Irish national 1000m record of 2:31.06 at the Diamond League meeting in Monaco, breaking a 27-year-old record held by Sonia O’Sullivan.

She added another milestone in 2022 by winning the 1500m Diamond League race in Brussels in 3:56.63, defeating Britain’s Laura Muir and other leading athletes while setting a new Irish record.

At the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Mageean narrowly missed a medal after finishing fourth in the 1500m final. Her performances that year earned her the BBC Northern Ireland Sports Personality of the Year award.

Her athletics journey began in childhood when she played camogie for Portaferry GAC before pursuing her ambition of representing Ireland at the Olympics.

Her junior career included silver medals in the 1500m at the 2010 World Junior Championships and the 2011 European Junior Championships.

An ankle injury prevented her from making her anticipated Olympic debut at the 2012 London Games. Following surgery in 2013, she returned to competition and won the Irish 1500m title in 2014.

She eventually made her Olympic debut at Rio 2016, reaching the 1500m semi-finals, before competing at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Games in 2021, where a calf injury disrupted her campaign.

Earlier in October 2026, Mageean married her long-term partner, Thomas Moran, in a small civil ceremony in Belfast.

Reacting to her death, Athletics Ireland expressed deep sadness, describing her as an inspiration whose courage, kindness and spirit would remain in the memories of many.

“We are heartbroken. An inspiration to so many, Ciara will be remembered for her courage, kindness and incredible spirit,” the organisation said.

Despite years of injuries and setbacks, Mageean remained a prominent figure in international athletics, earning admiration for her determination, achievements and openness about her experiences.
