Four die in Anambra auto crash

Four persons have died while another sustained injuries in a road accident along the Awka–Enugu Expressway, opposite the Old Government House, Awka, Anambra State.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Monday when a Toyota Camry carrying five male adults reportedly veered off the road into a drainage, hit a culvert and somersaulted.

The Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Anambra State Command, Margaret Onabe, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

Onabe said preliminary investigations indicated that the vehicle, a white Toyota Camry with registration number ASB 264 AV, was allegedly travelling at excessive speed before the driver lost control.

She said the crash occurred at about 4.31am on November 2, 2026, leaving four occupants dead and one injured.

According to the statement, the injured victim was evacuated to a hospital for medical attention.

It added that before the arrival of the FRSC rescue team, the victims had been taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Awka, where three were confirmed dead and their bodies were deposited in the mortuary.

The fourth victim was later taken to Apex Hospital, Awka, where he was also confirmed dead.

The statement read, “The Federal Road Safety Corps, Anambra State Sector Command, has confirmed a fatal road traffic crash involving a Toyota Camry car along the Awka–Enugu Expressway, opposite the Old Government House, Awka, in the early hours of Monday, November 2, 2026. The crash, which involved a white Toyota Camry with registration number ASB 264 AV, occurred at approximately 4:31am and involved five male adults.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the vehicle was allegedly travelling at excessive speed before veering off the road into a nearby drainage, hitting a culvert and somersaulting. Tragically, four male adults lost their lives, while one other male adult sustained injuries. The injured victim was evacuated to a hospital for medical attention.

“Before the arrival of the FRSC rescue team, the victims had reportedly been evacuated to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Awka, where three were confirmed dead and deposited in the mortuary.

“The fourth victim was subsequently taken to Apex Hospital, Awka, where he was also confirmed dead. The accident vehicle was recovered and towed to the FRSC Command, while some personal belongings, including cash amounting to ₦185,300 and a car key holder, were recovered.

“The Sector Command expresses its deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes the injured victim a speedy recovery.”

The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, cautioned motorists against excessive speeding, particularly during the early hours when visibility could be reduced.

She urged drivers to obey speed limits, maintain control of their vehicles and ensure that safety devices, including approved speed-limiting devices, were functional.

The FRSC also reminded motorists that speeding reduces reaction time and increases the severity of road crashes.

“All road users are therefore urged to prioritise safety and exercise maximum caution while travelling. Road Safety is a Shared Responsibility,” she added.

In a similar incident in August, nine people were burnt beyond recognition while eight others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a road crash near Zangoro Village along the Bauchi–Maiduguri Federal Highway.

The FRSC said the crash occurred at about 11.20pm on a Monday and was reported to the corps five minutes later.
