WAFU B U-20 Championship: Maikaba Reflects On Flying Eagles’ Win Over Ghana

Date:

Flying Eagles head coach Abdu Maikaba credited his side’s tactical discipline and ability to quickly rectify early mistakes as the key factors behind their victory over Ghana.

Nigeria defeated the Black Satellites 4-2 in their opening fixture at WAFU B U-20 Championship in Yamoussoukro on Monday.

Flying Eagles Strike Early

Maikaba’s side came flying out of the blocks and deservedly took the lead in the sixth minute through Olayemi Ayinla.

Ghana responded positively after the early setback and restored parity in the 23rd minute, with Mohammed Zaidan finishing clinically to make it 1-1.

The Flying Eagles regained control as Oraro Isaac restored Nigeria’s advantage on the half hour mark.

Muiz Adeleke then extended the lead five minutes later, giving the holders a comfortable cushion heading into the break.

The Black Satellites refused to give up and pulled one back when Kelvin Nkrumah converted from the penalty spot after the break.

However, Adeleke sealed the victory for Nigeria with his second goal of the game, calmly converting a late penalty to wrap up an impressive 4-2 win.

Maikaba Explains Tactical Tweak

Maikaba explained how his team weathered an early Ghanaian storm, and made crucial adjustments to turn the game in their favour.

“Getting our first goal in the opening five minutes gave us the confidence to continue with the game,” Maikaba said after the game.

“Despite the fact that Ghana dictated play in the first 25 minutes, we realised where we were getting it wrong, and we rectified it just before half-time.”
