The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, on Monday received the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, alongside his running mate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the party’s Sokoto State governorship candidate, Dr Shamsuddeen Aliyu Haido, at his palace in Sokoto.
During the visit, the Sultan called on politicians to conduct their political activities peacefully, respect one another, and protect the unity of society.
He stressed that politics should not be used as a means of dividing the people or creating hatred and hostility. He advised politicians and their supporters to avoid abusive language, insults, and anything that could lead to tension or violence within the community.
He noted that politicians have the right to present their policies and seek the support of the people, but should do so with respect, in accordance with the law, and while respecting other candidates and those with different political views.
The Sultan further urged politicians to place the interest of Nigeria and the peace of the country above political differences, noting that political positions are temporary, while unity and peace remain essential to the development of society.
He also emphasised that political leaders, particularly those seeking public office, have a responsibility to set a good example for their supporters and ensure that political campaigns do not become a source of conflict or division.
In his remarks, Peter Obi expressed appreciation to the Sultan for receiving the delegation.
The visit formed part of the delegation’s political engagement and consultations with traditional and community leaders.
The Sultan was accompanied during the visit by Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu (Wazirin Sokoto), Alhaji Rilwanu Bello (Magajin Rafin Sokoto), Alhaji Aliyu Attahiru Galadanchi (Galadiman Garin Sokoto), Alhaji Muhammadu Jabbi Kilgori (Sa’in Kilgori), Usman Shehu Abubakar (Fagacin Sokoto), and Alhaji Sa’idu Maccido (Secretary of the Sultanate Council).
