Nigeria’s Power Generation Crashes To 476.7MW As Outages Hit

Date:

Nigeria’s power generation fell from 3,840 megawatts (MW) at 7am to 476.70MW by 1pm on Monday, as electricity outages were reported in parts of the country.

Data on the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) portal showed that generation dropped by 3,363.30MW, with the sharp decline beginning around 12:40pm.

The drop left several power plants with zero output, including Egbin, Jebba, Shiroro and Kainji.

Odukpani, Omotosho and Sapele were among the plants still contributing electricity, while the dashboard showed that only five generating companies were producing power by early afternoon.

Meanwhile, Ikeja Electric attributed the reduced hours of electricity supply across its network to a shortfall in the amount of power allocated to it from the national grid.

In a public notice issued on Monday, the distribution company said it was engaging relevant stakeholders to improve the available supply.

“We wish to inform customers across Ikeja Electric network that the reduced hours of electricity supply is due to a shortfall in the amount of power currently allocated to our network from the national grid,” the notice read.

The company acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the reduced supply and appealed to customers for patience and understanding.

Ikeja Electric said it would continue distributing the power received from the grid “as efficiently and equitably as possible” and keep customers informed as the situation evolved.
