Domestic Gas Supply Hits 2.05bcf/day As NUPRC Unveils Swap Framework

Date:

Nigeria’s domestic gas supply has risen to an average of 2.05 billion cubic feet (Bcf) per day in the first half of 2026, as the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) moves to bridge the country’s persistent domestic gas supply gap through a new Gas Swap Framework.

The Commission Chief Executive (CCE) of NUPRC, Mrs Oritsemeyewa Eyesan, made this disclosure at the recently concluded stakeholders’ workshop on the Gas Swap Framework for Domestic Gas Delivery Obligation (DGDO) in Abuja.

The workshop was convened to deepen stakeholders’ understanding of the proposed framework, designed as a practical mechanism to enhance compliance with Domestic Gas Delivery Obligations while gathering industry input ahead of implementation.

Represented by the Executive Commissioner, Development and Production, Engr. Enorense Amadasu, the CCE described the DGDO as one of the Federal Government’s most strategic tools for ensuring that Nigeria’s vast gas resources directly support domestic economic growth, industrialisation and power generation.

She disclosed that of the country’s approximately 63 producing companies, 27 were allocated Domestic Gas Delivery Obligations, while only 23 companies are currently supplying gas to domestic consumers.

According to her, average domestic gas delivery stood at 2.05 Bcf per day against a DGDO allocation of 3.16 Bcf per day as of June 2026, translating to a 65 per cent performance level.

She said: “The Year-to-Date June 2026 data shows that a broader allocation base does not automatically translate into actual delivery.

“This delivery gap underscores the need for practical, innovative and market-responsive solutions that protect the integrity of the obligation while enabling real physical delivery of gas to domestic users. It is in this context that the proposed Gas Swap Framework becomes especially important.”

Eyesan, in a statement signed by NUPRC‘s Head, Media and Corporate Communications, signed by Eniola Akinkuotu, explained that the proposed framework would allow operators with stranded gas or limited evacuation infrastructure to fulfil their domestic supply obligations by partnering with operators that possess the required transportation and delivery infrastructure.

She noted that the arrangement would convert statutory obligations into actual gas supply, maximise existing infrastructure, strengthen gas availability for electricity generation and improve confidence in Nigeria’s domestic gas market.

“With the right commitment and implementation, the framework will help turn obligation into actual supply, make better use of existing assets, support gas-to-power delivery, and build greater confidence in Nigeria’s domestic gas market,” she added.

The Commission believes the initiative will remove infrastructure bottlenecks that have hindered domestic gas delivery despite rising production, while advancing the Federal Government’s gas commercialisation agenda.

The workshop forms part of NUPRC’s broader engagement with industry stakeholders to develop market-driven solutions aimed at improving gas utilisation, enhancing energy security and accelerating Nigeria’s economic development.
